The ArborStakes method was invented by a CLARB Certified Landscape Architect / ISA Certified Arborist who’s curiosity was literally snagged when a brush with a T-Post gashed his arm. He wasn’t the first in the industry to suffer injury, and many of his colleagues shared similar stories.
Besides being dangerous, traditional staking is fundamentally defective. There is no need for exposed hardware above ground when such an elegant below-grade solution exists. It's a simple matter of science. Like any ball-and-socket joint, a tree is immobilized when pinned through the rootball into the ground below.
Other alternative in-ground methods exist, but the drawback to staples or anchors is that they rely solely on lateral pressure exerted on top of the root mass. These bulky metal products are risky to underground infrastructure, hard to modify and will easily outlive the tree it was meant to support. Not to mention that these metal systems may actually become a liability to owners and cause irreparable damage to maintenance equipment.
